President Patti Neuhold-Ravikumar – UCO President- will expound on the meaning of social responsibility and provide the ethical framework in which journalists must operate.

9:15-10:20 a.m.

Exploring SR in Difference Communities

This panel will explore how the media can have an impact on social responsibility in different communities and cultures. The panel will feature leaders from community and international organizations as well as the media.

10:30-11:30 a.m.

Science vs. Politics

This panel will explore how the media covers conflict between scientific findings and political rhetoric. The featured panelists come from varying backgrounds in science and politics.

11:40 a.m.-12:50 p.m.

Keynote:

Suzan Shown Harjo

Journalism vs. Activism in the Media

Suzan Shown Harjo will be discussing how to balance being an activist and a journalist in today’s society and how journalists can be social responsible and ethical at the same time. She will also discuss how she made the decision to be a journalist and how she became an activists for Native American rights.

1-2 p.m.

Should the News Media be Socially Responsible?

This panel will explore what being socially responsible should mean to journalists, how to be more socially responsible in the profession, and what issues journalists face when they make efforts in social responsibility.

This panel will focus on how students can use their influence on campus to initiate change in their communities.

10:05-11 a.m.

Keynote:
Ayanna Najuma

Ayanna Najuma, the former owner of a PR/Marketing firm in Washington D.C. and a civil rights activist, will discuss how you can have an impact on social justice as an individual.

11:10-12 p.m.

Social Responsibility on Social Media

This panel will explore how individuals can use their influence on social media to advocate ethically and effectively for positive changes.

12:05-1 p.m..

Q&A: Jennifer Pearsall

Jennifer Pearsall, the Emergency Training Specialist and Planning Section Chief for New York City’s Emergency Management Department and UCO alum, will tackle the intricacies of trying to handle crises in this country’s biggest city.

1:10-2 p.m.

The Media, Politics, and You

This panel will discuss how government officials, marketers, journalists and students can balance social responsibility and politics in 2020.
